THE TEACHING STAFF
The teachers - experienced, highly skilled, understanding, and eager to
help - are the key resource of UNIVERSITY TEST PREPARATION SERVICES.
*
FRANK ALLEGRA, B.S., M.Ed., founder of University Test Preparation
Services in 1978, has done 20,000 hours of tutoring in math,
statistics, physics, and chemistry, as well as SAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT,
and MCAT preparation, on a group and individual basis. Developing ways
for people to solve Science and Math problems is his forte. He conducts
GMAT courses for Drexel University and standardized test preparation
for the University of Pennsylvania English Language Program. He
conducts SAT Subject classes for the International Program of the
Graduate School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania. He
provides individual SAT preparation for promising Simon Gratz High
School students. He taught SAT preparation classes for Philadelphia
Futures and for the College of General Studies High School Summer
Program at the University of Pennsylvania. In former lives Frank has
been a graduate student in Space Physics at M.I.T.; a draft counselor
in NYC during the Vietnam War; a director of residence halls at
Rutgers, New Brunswick and U. of Penn.; and editor of The Newsletter
for Teachers & T.A.'s. He has developed a GRE preparation course
for Delaware County Community College, and taught math at Camden County
College. Happily married, he lives with his family in University City
in a Victorian house whose upkeep is his avocation.
* SHELLY
BAUM-BRUNNER, B.A., M.S. Ed., Ph.D., has been teaching reading, writing
and test-taking strategy skills since 1980. She has developed effective
techniques for writing more coherently in limited amounts of time.
Former head of the writing department at the Philadelphia College of
Textiles and Science, she has taught at the University of Pennsylvania
and Beaver College. She writes, edits, and publishes her own work and
helps authors to publish theirs. She has been a teacher with University
Test Preparation Services since 1992.
* SHEILA ROBINSON, B.A., a
graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, studied to be a conductor
at Julliard School of Music. Having lived in Northern Italy and Japan,
she returned to her native Philadelphia where she taught an SAT Course
for fifteen years and a GED Course for five years at Philadelphia
Community College. She provides SAT preparation for Simon Gratz High
School, the Rise Program of Rosemont College, and Neighborhood
Interfaith Movement in Germantown. She taught SAT preparation classes
for Philadelphia Futures and for the College of General Studies High
School Summer Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She has
tutored children for many years in basic math and reading. She also
trained standardized patients at Temple Medical School and Jefferson
Medical School. She has been a teacher with University Test Preparation
Services since 2000.
* ROBERT DUNCAN, B.A., Oxford University,
M.A., University of Pennsylvania. While in graduate school at Penn, he
lectured in the Sociology Dept. and, as a resident adviser, assisted
undergraduates with study skills. Robert has been tutoring full-time
since 1997. He works with our middle and high school students, as well
as with adults going back to school, in a variety of subjects (math,
physics, chemistry, biology, writing, SAT preparation, and study
skills). Previously he home schooled his children who graduated from
some of the top colleges in the area.
* AL AIRONE, B.A., M.A.,
M.S., is a chemist with the Philadelphia Water Department - the people
who make sure there is fluoride in the water and there isn’t
tetrachloroethylene. Al has lived in Philadelphia since 1982, and,
although he grew up in New York City, he likes Philly and thinks it
does a good job for such a small place. When not reading obscure
chemical research, Al’s other interests include his family (Carolyn and
daughter Nora), foreign languages, and computer programming. The
Organic Chemistry instructor for the MCAT, Al has been a teacher with
UNIVERSITY TEST PREPARATION SERVICES since 1985.
* MARY ALLEGRA,
B.S., M.Ed., a human resource expert who worked for over 30 years for
the Philadelphia Water Department, has conducted numerous workshops
around the country. She has worked with the Academies Program and Small
Learning Centers of the Philadelphia School District. She has kept
active in the performing arts as a singer, choir director, actress, and
director. She has volunteered a great deal of time for a number of
community organizations in the University City area and is the
President of the Garden Court Community Association. Along with her
husband Frank, she developed a GRE preparation course for Delaware
County Community College. The initial teacher and curriculum innovator
of the verbal portions of the GRE, GMAT, MCAT & LSAT courses, Mary
has been a teacher with UNIVERSITY TEST PREPARATION SERVICES on a
part-time basis since 1985.
